HOUSAND OAKS, Calif., May 31, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Amgen AMGN, -0.69% today announced the initiation of the ARROW trial, a global Phase 3 study evaluating the benefit of Kyprolis® (carfilzomib) for Injection administered once-weekly with dexamethasone versus the current U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved twice-weekly administration schedule in patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma who have received prior treatment with bortezomib and an immunomodulatory agent (IMiD). The trial was initiated based on results from the Phase 1/2 CHAMPION study, which were presented (abstract no. 8527) at the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) on Sunday, May 31 at 8 a.m. CT.

May 30 (Reuters) - An experimental biotech drug being developed by Johnson & Johnson may offer hope to multiple myeloma patients who have run out of options, according to data from a midstage study released at a cancer meeting on Saturday.

J&J plans to use the Phase II study to seek U.S. and European approval of its antibody daratumumab to treat the blood cancer. The drug received breakthrough designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which can help speed the approval process.

Nearly 30 percent of 106 patients responded to daratumumab, including 3 complete responses, meaning no sign of cancer. Another 10 patients had a very good partial response defined as 90 percent reduction of myeloma protein in the blood or urine, while 18 had a partial response, researchers reported.

"To have complete remission speaks to the power of an immune-based approach," said Dr. Sagar Lonial, the study's lead investigator from Emory University in Atlanta. Lonial presented the data at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago.

Daratumumab directly targets myeloma cells and enlists components of the immune system to attack the cancer.

Lonial said this was the first antibody drug that demonstrated effectiveness against myeloma without having to be combined with other medicines.

While median overall survival had not yet been reached, researchers estimated 65 percent of patients would still be alive after one year. "These are people you'd expect to be living less than six months," Lonial said.

Patients in the trial on average had undergone five prior treatments. They had become resistant, or failed to respond, to Takeda's Velcade and Celgene's Revlimid, the most widely-used myeloma medicines, as well as newer drugs Kyprolis from Amgen and Celgene's Pomalyst.

Responses lasted 7.4 months on average, and the median time to disease progression was 3.7 months, researchers reported.

The drug, for which J&J licensed worldwide rights from Danish drugmaker Genmab, is also being tested in combination with other multiple myeloma treatments to further improve patient outcomes.

The most common side effects were skin reactions at the infusion site, typically with the first or second dosing, which is quite common with such medicines.

An estimated 26,850 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015. All patients eventually become resistant to therapy.

Sanofi' Hospital Division, or should I say Aventis's Hospital Division used to be the most respected hospital sales force in the industry. I am considering making a move over this division from another company to sell the PCSK9 inhibitor and Toujeo. Also, I am hoping things are better since the departure of Veibacher and his GSK team.

Can someone please tell me how it has been working in the division in 2015. Does Sanofi have realistic expectations selling Toujeo? Are the reps at 100% of goal?

Is Sanofi serious about keeping the hospital division long term? The reason I ask is because most pharmaceutical hospital reps are not allowed in their hospitals because the systems do not allow it. Therefore, most of these hospital reps do not have much of an impact on formulary decisions because it comes down to the system making the decision and not the local hospital.

Any idea on the pay scale for hospital team?

No big surprise here.. The OIG & FBI have been in the Alere office’s in Clearwater since Feb/March 2015 performing audits. MCR sent a refund request letter asking for 32 million back. Alere is just cocky and stupid enough to stroke a check to MCR and continue on with business as usual. I’ve been in the lab industry for 20 plus years (every aspect of lab). I worked at Avee/Alere for 1.5 years; on the lab floor as well as the business office. I’ve never seen such a profound mess. Every aspect of the place is a joke. Nothing works!!! Interface – testing - specimen handling – billing – procedures – ALL software is an absolute JOKE !!! Xifin, StarLims & Apollo are ALL cheap & not worth 1 penny. Xifin is the worst software I’ve seen in 20 years!!! I wouldn’t send my dogs piss to that wreck of a so called lab. I can’t wait till the axe drops!!! They lose 3-5 employees a month.. Tells ya how happy of a place it is to work at!! If anyone gets a bill from Alere.. Fight it!!! Contact your insurance company and tell them the charges are fraud. Alere already settled a 30 million dollar lawsuit with Horzion BCBS of NJ. They did so b/c they know what they are doing is illegal !!!! I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!

Honesty & integrity- we have to include that since we are BMS and that's what we pride ourselves on (check). I've got another one- a proven track record of results- that's a great one! Can anyone give me a base salary range for experienced rep interviewing for SDE position? Recruiter tells me $65-85 base and "at plan" bonus of $30-40K. Is this reasonable? Large territory - would think slightly higher base.

why is it with the new software, the offices have to enter how many cycles each patient was assessed for and not what they actually did? ex- if a patient is assessed for 12 cycles but can only afford 3 and actually only DO 3, the office still enters 12 even though that amount wasn't really completed. why?

why is it that at the end of every quarter our sales reports are "unavailable" for a full week and when they are available again, the numbers are way off?

why do I have to lie in Salesforce and make my forecast much higher than what I know my accounts will actually do?

when I look at CoolConnect and directly communicate with my offices to calculate how many cycles they did per month, those cycles don't match with the company provides me with? (this is the total number for the month)

and if the company is calculating my paycheck based on cycles utilized, why dont they share the details of those numbers with me?

Packaging old stuff in new boxes and trying to bamboozle hospitals into buying obsolete product and instruments is not disruptive technology. Selling a million dollar robot that nobody wants or needs is not disruptive technology. Knocking off a product and selling it cheaper is not disruptive technology. One millimeter increments to our poly is not disruptive technology.

When a company enters our industry with a cure for arthritis, that will be disruptive technology. Don't let 2-bit MBAs and old peddlers who have read the latest Forbes magazine tell you what our industry has done over the last 10 years is disruptive.

Don't call yourself a launch powerhouse when Afrezza has been a disaster and Tujjeo has been treading water at the edge of a ocean whirlpool. This was nothing more than trying to make Paris that things are awesome. As for Praluent it will come down to managed care and PBM's . End of story, all the sob stories from patients mean nothing if they can't afford it or it's not covered on their insurance.
This was hard to watch today and the one bright spot is Jez seems like a good guy and is trying.

(they do the same crap to their clients, it is very well known).

Good example is MNKD -- they issued a $2 price target and now look at it...I am making more betting against Goldman's advice than I ever made at work.

THAT SAID---- watch them for a while first, see how they work, do some trading in a dummy account, when you get it down, then use real money at your own risk only after doing your own homework. Nobody said this was easy.

BI is a place for 3 types of reps, those who are waiting for their career to die (close to retirement), washed up reps who can't advance else where, or the cheap washed up contract rep. With the announcement of cost savings and therapeutic focus if you haven't noticed those reps with big bases (70k+, which is low anyway to industry standards here at BI) will be weeded out with the new contract sales reps in training once they roll them over. There are people that will work for much less to do this mindless job its called contract reps. If you have half a brain you will read the writing on the wall. best of luck.

FM is an AE in HCV? Now I know this company is a joke!

I just found out that FM was hired as the AE for the Midwest in HCV? Hasn't he been let go and rehired more times than we can count? He was my manager for a year and it was the worst year of my life. He's a nice guy but socially the most awkward person I have ever met! I never knew what the hell he was talking about or the point he was trying to make. My customers couldn't stand him and most of them asked me not to bring him with me to appointments. I feel sorry for the reps that have to work with him. Warning: he will bring nothing but damage to your business and your relationships with customers. He knows NOTHING about sales. Keep him away from your big guys. He will embarrass the shit out of you. He knows how to analyze things that have nothing to do with sales and ask you to do mindless and worthless projects. He will be one of the reasons you all fail. Another REALLY bad hire in hepatology.

ConvaTec, with a new CEO at the helm, plans to raise nearly $1.9 billion in loan and credit facilities in a bid to refinance its debt. ConvaTec, which just named a new CEO and is rumored to be up for sale, plans to raise nearly $1.9 billion in loan and credit facilities in a debt-refinancing move.
The Luxembourg-based medical device company will seek $1.65 billion in term loan facilities and a $200 million revolving credit facility, both due in 2020. Plans call for using the money to refinance existing credit facilities and senior secured notes, the company said.
A ConvaTec representative told MassDevice.com that the refinancing is "leverage-neutral, and will provide us with an improved maturity profile." ConvaTec said it will offer further details about the refi plan during a lender meeting in London planned for tomorrow and another in New York May 20.
Private equity firms Avista Capital Partners and Nordic Capital own ConvaTec. They brought on Moraviec in 2009 to lead Convatec's business in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He became interim CEO last December. Earlier this month, it named its interim CEO, former EMEA president Paul Moraviec, as its new, permanent CEO. In late 2014, reports surfaced that ConvaTec had appointed Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to explore a sale of the company that could be worth as much as $10 billion.

The nurse said they would switch to movantik but only if I showed my true spirit by gloving up and performing a digital relief. The smell is still in my hair, I think I have to burn the clothes. Why is it that no matter how hard reps prepare for field visits, prep their customers, ask dozens of probing questions to the irritation and disgust of customers, regurgitate the legally saturated marketing messages verbatim to customers and get customers to commit to change behaviors or initiate some protocol, CTL's still find a way to criticize everything reps do on their calls? Really?

Whether you are in tablets or vaccines I have heard nothing but horror stories of how reps make sure they go through and implement the meticulous checklist of ridiculous expectations and demands that management wants, but the CTL's still find a list of faults to berate reps with during field visits. I am talking about S1's to lead execs who appear mystified as to how they can ever get their CTL's to ever say "great job, you handled that call well or you had a good day.". Almost never do any reps hear that. How on Earth do CTL's and even DCO's expect better sales if they are constantly berating their reps over every little thing or demanding reps to "challenge the customers", to the point of pissing them off. How is that a winning strategy?

I get that CTL's have to justify their jobs by coaching reps but constantly telling your reps "I saw you do this but you should have done that" and almost never acknowledging the positives is not going to help Merck succeed. CTL's, you are burning out your reps and you are burning bridges with the customers with your "push your customers out of their comfort zone" nonsense. You are coaching to lose.

CTL's if you keep this up, you will continue to lose your reps morale/loyalty, lose access for your reps and lose sales for the company. If you decide to keep this attack up, you may find on future field visits that customers may start a no see policy for managers and only allow reps to to interact with customers by themselves. (Coincidence or passive agressive pushback from reps relationships with customers? Hmm.) You have been warned! Stop coaching to lose or else you will lose the capability to coach your reps if customers don't allow managers in their offices? Then how can you justify your job to your DCO? Do you get the point? So back off!!!

We're all the same

To all the folks reading this junk and arguing who has better products, support, management, ect. It's all B.S. We are all essentially the same. We all have like products with "good" mid to long term data that is spun a million different ways. We all have marketing folks and interns trying to find the one vantage point that doesn't truly effect medicine, but simply their next move or advancement within the company. We all have engineers that drink the kool-aid and recite familiar verbiage to collect a check worthy of their education. The big 5 companies, and some smaller companies, all have market share somewhere with people making good livings. what makes any company "successful" in a certain area (minus consultancies) is the REP! The rep, for whatever company, that knows his/her products/competitors/specs/theory's the best, preparers for the worst when not expected, gives pertinent usable feedback, templates every case (just in case), grabs an extra bin of polys' (because he/she knows the doc fucks one up on a regular basis), does the circulators job in the OR to help efficiency, and can socialize with anyone is going to thrive no matter what company they represent. Us successful reps are waiting for the company that recognizes and rewards this fact. As the crunch happens, the company that stops the dollars flowing into the mass "sales mails/useless advertisements", marketing pow-wows, and reverses commission cuts, and decides to reward the front line sales folks for what truly drives what fuels any business, SALES, will be the biggest winner. We are waiting and willing to move.

I encourage you to do your own research on workplace mobbing and educate yourself to know the signs of it occurring, what you can do to prevent yourself from becoming a victim, and what you can do to prevent becoming a member of a workplace mob.


"Gossip will rapidly shift from what management is doing to the worker, to what the worker is doing to management. The gossip will be initiated and spread most aggressively by those who once supported the worker who ....will assuage their conscience by convincing themselves they did the only right and necessary thing when they turned against their friend or coworker.
As the gossip spreads, new details will be added by each speaker and over time in order to keep the topic entertaining, the gossip will become more and more salacious and unbelievable until eventually, the worker will be accused of being mentally ill, making a threat to self or others, and/or committing a serious ethical or criminal transgression. Of the dozens of mobbing targets I have spoken with, I have not spoken to any who have not been accused of one or more of these three things—unless they got out early." From
What to Do When a Coworker is Mobbed

I was the victim of workplace mobbing at Miraca Life Sciences. I did not know it had a name and I was devastated by it because I felt I had done something to deserve it. Workplace mobbing is distinct from workplace bullying behavior. Mobbing behavior is baseless

Above is an excerpt by Dr. Harper an anthropologist who studies organizational conflict. I was accused of all three actions/behaviors she discusses: these accusations were both baseless and false. I am in treatment to overcome the psychological injury this has caused me; namely I am suffering from PTSD and still recovering from the affects of stress related to burnout.

Common Characteristics of Mobbing Targets

While there may be a tendency to characterize adult mobbing victims who suffer in the workplace in a similar manner to victims of playground bullying, this simply is not accurate. Playground bullying victims tend to be viewed as awkward children who are deemed timid or weak by their more assertive peers. However, victims of mobbing in the workplace have but one common blemish among them – they tend to fall outside of organizational norms. They also generally tend to be women between the ages of 32 and 55 years.

These mobbing targets are typically educated and well-regarded for their competency. Further, they tend to be attractive and often are both outspoken and willing to make strategic organizational changes to benefit or propel the organization. They also tend to be highly accomplished, exceptionally creative and greatly dedicated.

Because of their competence and strong work ethic, it is often very difficult for mobbing victims to comprehend why they suddenly were isolated, humiliated and ridiculed. In fact, former allies can quickly turn against the target — without cause — believing that because the individual is being widely criticized, there must be just cause. The target is often branded as a troublemaker and others who had otherwise good feelings about the person quickly disassociate, creating feelings of isolation and abandonment. The target quickly loses his or her feelings of belonging, identity and dignity.

The Types of Organizations Where Mobbing Happens

As mentioned earlier, mobbing in the workplace can happen in organizations of any size and within any industry. However, common offenders have been identified. Characteristics of these toxic environments are listed below.

Industries / Organizations On The Decline: Industries experiencing a decline in overall demand for their products face a great deal of financial duress. Publicly-held organizations also face increased pressure to satisfy shareholders. Widespread concerns like these leave an organization highly prone to mobbing, as upper level management tend to ignore these types of challenges when faced with improving the bottom line quickly. Some in higher management will, unfortunately, even go as far as lending encouragement to this damaging behavior.

Bureaucratic Organizations: In bureaucratic organizations (such as the government), there are numerous policies put in place to keep the overall organization running smoothly. However, the atmosphere in these environments lends itself to a disconnect among higher level managers who would typically reduce the severity of the challenge to a mere clashing of personalities. What often happens in bureaucratic environments is reported cases of mobbing are not addressed, often with the attitude that the situation will resolve itself. Instead, left unaddressed, mobbing does nothing more than expand further and increase in intensity.



Initiated most often by a person in a position of power or influence, mobbing is a desperate urge to crush and eliminate the target. The urge travels through the workplace like a virus, infecting one person after another. The target comes to be viewed as absolutely abhorrent, with no redeeming qualities, outside the circle of acceptance and respectability, deserving only of contempt.

As the campaign proceeds, a steadily larger range of hostile ploys and communications comes to be seen as legitimate."

Bullies are very good at convincing others, including coworkers and managers, that the victim deserves the abuse that they are subjected to. As the attacks continue day in and day out the target begins to be worn down and eventually will make a mistake. Perhaps they will have an emotional outburst and lash back at the bully.

This is stereotypical in mobbing cases and this incident will be used to turn the tables on the target as the bully will loudly proclaim that this proves that the target is the real troublemaker. This often gives management, who have done nothing about the bullying, the opportunity to bring formal disciplinary measures against the target and the victim winds up being the one who is punished.

This adds insult to injury as the mobbing continues to escalate out of control, especially once managers have gotten onboard with the abuse and have sided with the bully.

It is not unusual for mobbing targets to suffer heart attacks or strokes, or even to commit suicide or in rare cases, kill their tormenters.

5. Less time on administrative conference calls.

6. Use HC1 as intended. A sales tool not a sales manager. I happen to like HC1 if used properly.

7. Treat the sales staff as professionals and stop talking down to them and insulting them because customer service starts on the inside.

Here is the problem with Sanofi. Ever since Sanofi took over Aventis, the Sanofi employment model has been in place. People wanting to do a specific job rotated through various other positions with a 18 month required stint. No one stays in a position long enough to become an "expert". Aventis had people in marketing that wanted to be in marketing, in sales training that wanted to be in sales training, managers that wanted to be managers and sales reps that wanted to sell and it worked! They had a passion for a specific job and did it very well for many years. With Sanofi, there are way too many people "doing their time" in critical positions then moving on. Not to mention the ones that have no business failing time after time after time!

Whistleblowing ex-Covidien rep sues for wrongful termination

A former sales rep for Covidien's vascular business in Southern California accuses the company of firing him for blowing the whistle on an alleged kickbacks scheme.

A former sales rep for Covidien's vascular business accused the company of wrongful termination after it fired him for blowing the whistle to the FBI on an alleged kickbacks scheme.

Erin Hayes, who started with VNUS Medical Technologies in 2008, about a year before Covidien bought it, alleged that a high-volume vascular surgeon in Southern California tried to shake down the company. The surgeon said Covidien would need to pony up a kickback in order to keep West Coast Vascular's business, according to the lawsuit, filed Feb. 23 in a California state court. Covidien had the case removed to the U.S. District Court for Northern California May 12, according to court documents.

Covidien, which was acquired for $50 billion by Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) earlier this year, paid $440 million for VNUS in May 2009. West Coast Vascular, which has 5 locations, was a Covidien training center and "among Covidien's biggest clients in the U.S.," according to the lawsuit. The surgeon accused by Hayes had, in turn, "a significant practice and was a large purchaser of Covidien's vein and arterial product lines."

After Hayes reported the alleged shakedown attempt, his superiors at Covidien immediately convened a July 2012 meeting at the WCV offices, according to the complaint. There the physician "reiterated his demand for money and stated that his vein screening needed to be promoted and paid for by Covidien."

Hayes alleged that a Covidien executive agreed to have Covidien's marketing team design, place and pay for a newspaper advertisement, cloaking the payment as compensation for "sham 'trainings' purportedly conducted by the physician at WCV's training center."

After Hayes allegedly questioned his superiors about the legality of the arrangement, he said he was told to "forget the meeting occurred." After learning that the ad payments were made, Hayes sent letters in November 2012 to the FBI and the U.S. Health & Human Services Dept. detailing "Covidien's business practice of engaging in medical kickback schemes to persuade physicians to purchase and use Covidien's products," according to the documents.

Hayes also blew the whistle on Covidien's alleged practice of using temporary staffers called "per diems" to market physicians' practices, in exchange for using Covidien devices, according to the suit.

The company sacked Hayes Feb 25, 2013, for a "lack of integrity" in improperly recording the sale of catheters to a physician with offices Hayes' territory and another rep's area, Hayes claimed. And after his departure, Hayes alleged, Covidien sought to black-ball his name with potential employers by publishing false information about him, including "false accusations that he breached his duties of confidentiality and nondisclosure with Covidien, and false claims that he was terminated for 'dishonesty.'"

"Defendants also disclosed confidential correspondence between plaintiff Hayes and the California Division of Occupational Safety & Health in which he reported workplace safety and health hazards he witnessed at the offices of certain physicians," the lawsuit alleged. "Specifically, plaintiff Hayes reported what he believed was the illegal re-use of catheters by medical providers at their clinics. Defendants obtained these reports and then circulated them to the physicians named in the reports with the intention of 'outing' plaintiff Hayes as the confidential source of the information. The purpose of doing so was to damage plaintiff Hayes' rapport with his clients, and to create animosity toward him. Defendants also falsely accused plaintiff Hayes of harassing a WCV staff member."

Covidien denied all of the claims in Hayes' suit, citing the doctrine of unclean hands "by virtue of his unlawful, immoral, negligent, and other wrongful conduct."

"Plaintiff's claims are barred because all of Covidien's acts affecting the terms and conditions of his employment were privileged, justified, and done with good cause, and there was a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason for each employment action and omission," Covidien argued, according to the documents. "Plaintiffs claims are barred in whole or in part as he unreasonably failed to take advantage of the preventative or corrective opportunities provided by Covidien and/or 3rd parties, or to avoid harm otherwise."

Hayes wants a jury trial, compensatory damages including 2 times the amount of back pay plus interest, front pay, pre- and post-judgment interest and damages for "emotional pain and suffering due to retaliation." The suit also seeks punitive damages for alleged "malicious, reckless or callous indifference" and unpaid wages and legal costs.

In February, the Ev3 subsidiary Medtronic acquired along with Covidien agreed to a $1.25 million settlement with U.S. Justice Dept. over another whistleblower lawsuit brought by former sales rep Amanda Cashi.

GILD: Harvoni WK April retail sales are $1527M (-2% mo/mo); Sovaldi WK April retail sales are $283M (-2% mo/mo)

This is the fist time that month-over-month Harvoni sales have declined, and we are watching closely.
WK capture rate for Harvoni was 133% last quarter. Applying this capture rate and assuming similar -2% mo/mo trends for May and June, Harvoni is already tracking toward $3.4B for Q2, above cons $2.7B USA. Our IMS APP accounts for 43% gross-to-net for Q2 and predicts Q2 Harvoni sales of $2.8B USA.
Assuming that Sovaldi continues declining 2% mo/mo, Sovaldi is tracking toward $399M (WK capture rate of 209% from last quarter), which is in line with consensus of $400M USA and our IMS APP estimate of $382M.
Together, the Harvoni+Sovaldi franchise is tracking toward ~$3.8B in US sales, higher than IMS script predicted revenues of $3.2B USA and consensus $3.1B USA. As a reminder, GILD reported Q1:15 $3.4B USA, which beat cons $2.6B USA.
WK "sales" appear very strong and imply revenue numbers that suggest another beat in Q2, but IMS scripts suggest sales in line with consensus—this may result from taking a 40%+ gross to net into account in our IMS APP.
PCYC: Imbruvica WK April retail sales are $61M (+7% mo/mo), tracking toward $232M vs. our estimate $211M.

We use last quarter's capture rate of 84% and estimate same +7% growth for May and June. We note that WK capture rates for Imbruvica have been changing recently (from stable 90%+ earlier last year to 77% Q4:14 and 84% Q1:15), and April's +7% mo/mo growth is much higher than IMS scripts growth (+1% Apr/Mar).
BIIB: Tecfidera April retail sales are $296M (+3% mo/mo), tracking toward $712M USA, below cons $724M USA but in line with our estimate of $712M USA.

· Tecfidera retail sales capture rate was 125% in Q1:15. Applying this capture rate and conservatively estimating flat May and June sales (IMS Apr:March scripts were flat), Tecfidera US sales are tracking toward $712M for Q2:15. On the other hand, assuming +3% growth for both May and June would suggest $734M.

CELG: Pomalyst April sales are $42M (+4% mo/mo), tracking toward $146M USA vs. cons $147M USA.

· Pomalyst WK average capture rate over the last year has been 89%. If we apply this same capture rate to Q2 and assume similar +4% mo/mo growth for May and June, this is tracking toward $146M in the US, in line with consensus $147M USA.

CELG: Otezla April sales are 44M (+21% mo/mo), tracking to $93M vs. cons $85M WW.

Even conservative assumptions of flat May and June and using Q1:15 capture rate of 143% suggest that Otezla is tracking to $93M in Q2. However, WK capture rate fluctuated from a fairly accurate 97% for Q4:14 to 143% for Q1:15, and thus WK Q2 estimates may be inaccurate if capture rates continue to fluctuate.
