Maybe us lower level employees can keep our jobs without fear, I am a KAE who is very close to a lot of my phlebs and the fear out there is real. My people are scared of management in the area I work and I try to help them the best i can but I am in fear as well.... Hope they come quick!

Quotas Are Now Irrelevant - Is a lawsuit Needed?

May is here and no Goals which makes the quota the company provide irrelevant. Here are the reasons why:
1. A quota for a commission based system should be given far well in advance prior to the beginning of the quota period. Because a reps performance rating and bonus pay is highly tied into their ranking this information needs to be provided before the beginning of the quota period. Realistically it should be known 2 quarters prior.
2. By delaying the release of quotas, the company can essentially analyze the sales in a territory and adjust the goals to limit pay to the employee. Hence affecting a reps ranking and performance rating.
3. This move makes the quota system irrelevant. Any numbers they come up with is not valid. If you receive a poor performance rating this can be argued in court that these numbers used came from fuzzy math and not based on fairness. The justice system is about fairness always remember that.
4. A lawsuit is needed to force the company to provide a yearly if not semi annual quota system. This obviously won't apply for new product launches.
5. This process allows any company to pick their own winners and losers or at the very least to keep moving the goal line further away. Essentially you might think you have a touchdown but since no one knows where the goal line is until the game is 1/3 over they could easily be adjusting the goal line further away taking your touchdown away.

Removing kyphoplasty distributors?

Any truth to this rumor? I hear they only want to keep highest volume distributors and try to steal the rest of our business back using direct reps. They barely survived a couple of years ago because we saved their a$$. We sold where they couldn't. Had the same joker for years in Florida with no business, bring in a distributor and their sales skyrocket. Now they want to try and screw us. Wtf?
Do they really think an underpaid rep will be able to double the business? Maybe the new company will just sell off this loser division.

One Last Poem for the Inspector

Ah, I had to dust off the quill and offer one last ode to you. The wheels turn slow, but they get there in the end.

The Inspector, with Regards...

Once there were ten, what a great team,
Then our momentum ran out of its steam.
It wasn't the market, or a new drug,
Nope it was our manager, he pulled the plug.
On our ambition, our spirit, our fire,
Working for him? The situation was dire.

He'd come to a field ride, never would he fail,
To deliver a droning fifteen minute detail.
He would get quite angry and show his dismay,
If you didn't deliver it on a call in just the same way.

We lost Sarah, we lost Lisa, Seth and Ricki.
We lost Tim, we lost others, damn was he real picky.
He ran off the old, and the new and the best,
He's a good manager? Ha, you say that in jest.

Now we have all moved on to bigger and better things,
Your monotone voice, just a bad, distant ring.
But today I come back, to finally clean the slate,
And to celebrate your justified fate.

Good luck JP, and with complete vitriol,
I remind you...just control what you can control.

Simply a Bad Place to Work

When you add up all of the negative feedback about the recent evolution of this company, it is just a total mess. Especially bad upper management leadership, robotic middle management based on calls per day, with no measure of quality, a pod sales model that is so outdated it is comical, technical support that is the worst in the industry, call plans that change with the wind so destroy representative consistency and a level of LOW field morale that is something I have never seen before. There is such a air of depression among the representatives, there is no wonder why many are going thru the daily motions and spending a lot of time job hunting. The funniest thing is the every 6 months --- "wait by the phone", to hear if you have been let go. What a great, Family oriented company this is ---- NOT!

Seattle Genetics is hiring for 100 positions, Chief Operating Officer Eric Dobmeier said Thursday.

The Bothell-based biotech company (Nasdaq: SGEN) is looking to fill positions ranging from biostatisticians and research associates to the head of its cancer research program and vice president of marketing.

That growth is to keep the company, which develops cancer treatments, on track with what a Seattle Genetics spokeswoman called a "great trajectory."

Hiring new people will also coincide with the company ramping up spending in coming years to support preclinical developments, clinical trial activities and continue the commercialization of its flagship product Adcetris, according to a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Adcetris is used to treat lymphoma.

Seattle Genetics is also investing heavily in its pipeline. That was one factor that led to a $27 million loss in the fourth quarter last year.

Framing our minds for the months ahead...

Dear Onyx Colleagues:

As you continue to read the comments made by the AMGEN trolls on this board, a word of advice:

"Don’t let negative & toxic people rent space in your head. Raise the rent & Kick them out."

We do not need to bring ourselves down to the AMGEN level.

Wishing great futures to all.

Framing our minds for the months ahead...

Jez, do you really believe...

Not paying the Lantus contest for January and February is motivational to the sales force? It is nearly May - your home office team can't even keep up with a simple contest.

Making the RBLs, RCMs, ABLs and Sales Professionals send trackers into the VPs weekly is motivational and actually drives sales?

Making every territory do 3 programs a month or 5 for the Afrezza team, circa 1995 pharma, actually drive business?

Having NO managed care access for Afrezza has nothing to do with scripts being lost at the pharmacy?

Giving merit "increases" that amount to less than the increased cost of employee health insurance motivates and engages employees?

Full day meetings filled with 75% webcasts sitting in expensive hotel conference rooms accomplishes anything?

Jez the clock is running out on Afrezza and Toujeo. When Novo launches Tresiba in January you will not know what happened.

If you were wise you would get into the field with small groups of reps and figure out what's really happening. Your "Senior Leaders" can tell you everything you want to hear - you have no idea of just how bad it is to be so over-managed.

This is the lowest point for morale we've seen in 15 years and it is getting worse by the day.

Everyone is in pure compliance mode just checking the box to stay out of trouble.

Clock is ticking.

Jez, do you really believe...

Lay offs are coming

Amusing to see Roche management buy all these small companies with little to no forethought.
The sequencing business definitely seems like a very long shot in the dark. These idiots couldn't leverage a well-established technology like 454, but are on a wild goose chase with the Genia nanopore technology, that nobody here seems to have a clue about.

I think I have a fairly good idea who is in line to be affected next. Your guesses?

OTS doubles as drug dealer

So I heard an OTS is bragging that his manager has him buy marijuana in the city and drive it out to him or give it to him on their field days. Not sure who is paying for it but this is really a great way to get in good with your manager. Interesting additional responsability for an OTS given that it is not legal in Illinois. Now that the RD has been promoted to Foster City, maybe the OTS can fed-ex his pot using Gilead's account number? I hear it will be a regularly scheduled delivery.

Amgen wants to become an immuno-oncology/hem onc leader

But they aren't. They are late to the game and no one sees Amgen as a leader. THIS IS AFFIRMED BY AZ CHOOSING CELGENE AND NOT AMGEN!!!

http://ift.tt/1EAZWOe

LONDON (Reuters) - AstraZeneca (AZN.L) is getting a $450 million (297.42 million pounds) windfall by letting Celgene (CELG.O) develop a prized immunotherapy drug for blood cancers but its chief executive insists the deal is about strategy, not cash.

Some investors are worried about the drugmaker's reliance on such "externalisation" deals to fill a short-term revenue gap. Deutsche Bank analyst Richard Parkers said income from these agreements was of "questionable sustainability".

Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, however, said he had been looking for a partner in blood cancers since last year and by teaming up with U.S.-based Celgene, a leader in haematology, AstraZeneca would accelerate its drug's path to market.

AstraZeneca will effectively give away around half the sales of its drug MEDI4736 in blood cancers under the Celgene agreement, but Soriot said the deal would unlock value that the British company could not have achieved on its own.

"We could do it ourselves but with a partner in haematology we will do much, much better," he told reporters in a conference call. "It's more strategically driven than financially driven, though of course the financial aspects also help."

AstraZeneca Inks Multiple Deals, Immuno-Oncology in Focus - Analyst Blog Zacks 3 hrs ago
Aberdeen retreats on sell advice Financial Times q 7 hrs ago
More
AstraZeneca believes blood cancers could represent 40 percent of the total cancer market, yet Soriot said it did not include this in a $45 billion 2023 sales forecast issued last year as it was not clear then how it would tap the market.

AstraZeneca has extensive experience in solid tumours, but not blood cancers, which is a highly specialised field involving different groups of doctors.

Citi analyst Andrew Baum said the Celgene collaboration made sense given AstraZeneca's absence of expertise and Celgene's desire to expand its presence in immuno-oncology (I-O).

AstraZeneca is up against several I-O rivals, such as Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY.N), Merck (MRK.N) and Roche (ROG.VX), and Soriot argued that by getting into bed with Celgene it would be at a competitive advantage in the blood cancer space.

Under the deal, AstraZeneca will book sales of MEDI4736 in blood cancers and will pay Celgene an initial royalty of 70 percent, which will decrease to approximately half of sales over a period of four years.

The Last Ride

Even though I post this I know I would not have the testicular fortitude to do this. I have about had it with my manager. As they were yanbering in my car about how they would have done every call different and how much better I would be if I only did it their way I wanted to say that I've been doing this for over a decade, you just came over last month. But I held my tongue and instead daydreamed about what I would like to do on my last day here. This is what I've visualized. I want to quit a day they ride with me. I want to take him to the furthest office in my territory in some small town. I would wait until we had stopped and they were on their phone. I would get out of the car as well and call HR telling them I quit. I would then get back in the car, lock the doors.....and leave my manager in that small town.

Ahh such a dream. But alas, I have a wife, mortgage and kids to think about. So I can only dream of them abandoned in some dusty Midwest town, wondering how they were going to get back

A New Leaderboard will Emerge

A lot of reps worked very hard to drive their sales but thought nothing of the bottom line. It's a shame such hard work was expended purely for personal gain without thought to the long term repercussions. I guarantee half the "leaderboard" will never be seen again and an exodus is soon upon us. So much for the 85% retention goal.

From the reps perspective, the last minute conf call and ththe immediate cessation of the cash option are BS. We should have had at least until May 1 to spread the news to all our customers rather than them getting the news from other sources. This had to be done, but considering how long it took to make the decision, what's another week?

So long to the charlatans with triple digit weekly sales, time to rely on profitable sales in order to collect s bonus check. Goal 4, treat this like it was your franchise. Too many reps didn't take this to heart. Ultimately, it was JVs fault for letting this get out of hand yet too many whiners and crybabies are blaming Lou for fixing a major problem. You call Lou a dinosaur, but think about this, he will make the company more profitable and get rid of the impropriety. It is a new era and we all have to face it. Giving away free rxes and collecting a bonus on each is unethical. Sales will slip but profitability will rise.

Its the dawn of a new day, rise and face the challenge or leave, but font carry on like a pedantic brat.

Disengagement in Irvine R and D

Morale in Irvine is the lowest it has ever been. People want out and most are just here buying time. Why didn't they ask if people wanted out? It seems like many of the people left are kiss asses who don't care and everyone knows it. How long can this go on?

Disengagement in Irvine R and D

Amgen prospective

I have been at Amgen for 10 years. I survived a number of lay-offs and now find myself in our CV unit preparing to launch against Regeneron/Sanofi. I have read your boards with great interest and wanted to add a few thoughts from a different perspective.

There are no great or perfect companies anymore. Even in the biotech arena, the company/employee relationship is vastly different than a decade ago. Things that used to signal "big pharma" are now everywhere. Our culture at Amgen is frequently labeled "toxic", but I make the best of the culture that exists between me and my managers, co-workers and customers.

Regeneron's salary and benefits are similar to those at Amgen. If you make more, good for you. Unfortunately, you will find most companies lowering the top end of salary ranges for salespeople. It's a buyer's market.

Yes, you will be co-promoting with Sanofi. We will be co-promoting with a contract sales force. Both will suck. You make the best of it.

There are people convinced that Amgen has already won the managed care race in this class. Don't be fooled. MC will be against both of our products. We will all have to work for each script.

These jobs (Regeneron or Amgen) are not for everyone. There is risk and with the state of our industry, none of us should plan on a job lasting more than 3 years.

Take the best job you can. Make as much as you can. Save as much as you can. Gain as many contacts as you can. Add as much to your skill set as you can. Be ready for your next move.

If you take the job, good luck. If you get an offer and choose not to move forward, good luck. If you didn't get the job, there will be others.

Your job doesn't define you. It provides you the opportunity to do the other things in life that define you.

Amgen, you keep raising the price of Enbrel without making any improvements

Amgen Earnings Reveals Ugly Truth About Drug Pricing and Sales 'Growth'

BOSTON (TheStreet) -- On Tuesday night's first-quarter earnings call, Amgen (AMGN ) said Enbrel sales totaled $1.1 billion, or 13% higher than the year-ago quarter. Enbrel is an old rheumatoid arthritis drug (it received U.S. approval in 1998) so generating low-teens sales growth after all these years is pretty impressive, right?

It is, until you examine how Amgen delivered those first-quarter Enbrel sales. A closer look reveals an ugly truth about how drug companies sometimes generate sales "growth" for mature drugs. The fact is that Enbrel isn't being used by more patients. The drug just costs more. A lot more.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition, and so too are the regular, consistent price increases Amgen relies upon to keep Enbrel sales growing.

The price and pricing of prescription drugs has come under intense scrutiny recently, so it seems only a matter of time before critics start to ask questions like, "Amgen, you keep raising the price of Enbrel without making any improvements to the drug. Why should rheumatoid arthritis patients and their insurance companies pay more for the same benefit?"

The 13% increase in first quarter Enbrel sales was driven mostly by a 19% increase in the drug's price. Unit volume -- the amount of Enbrel actual sold in the quarter -- fell 2%. Excluding the price hike and inventory increase, Enbrel sales would have dropped 8% year over year.

Amgen, you keep raising the price of Enbrel without making any improvements

Applying for job

Hey, I'm applying for a job with lilly and wanted to know what you all think from the inside. I worked for pharma for about a year, it was a POS company that only lasted two years. I got out and got my BSN through an accelerated program and have been a nurse for 3 years. I was wanting to know if anyone would like to extend some knowledge about the company and a better way to get a face to face. It's been awhile since I've been in the industry. I've forgotten about the intense interview processes as nursing is exactly the opposite. Again, any information would be helpful. Thank you for your time.

This company will tank because of Liposcience new hires

Its sad working so hard here to see so many new hires that came over from Liposcience. They are a bunch of inbreds that use to blow smoke up each others ass and pat each other on the backs congratulating themselves on being the rulers of the world. In fact, look it how they tanked Liposcience, it went into bankruptcy and got bought out. They are fake workers and there's too many of them. Looks fishy to me.

NBS Retirement Packages

Thank you very much.

NBS Retirement Packages

Poor HCV sales not Reps, DMs and RDs fault....

Here's why. Most reps are doing poorly. They can't all be bad sales people. Managers can't all be bad managers, RDs etc. It's the expectation from senior management that's wrong. The market share forecast and expectation that VPak could establish a significant share was fundamentally wrong. If management said we expect 6-7 percent market share, and did 8-10% market share. There would be cigars and champagne at the meeting. Although VPak works it comes with baggage. So expectations need to be different. This will be a case study in business school.

small molecule AD therapy

No need for dangerous antibodies?

The “overactivity” is a concern because Colton and her team found that microglia immune cells are chewing up an important amino acid, arginine, which could in turn lead to memory loss and build up of the proteins or plaques in the brain associated with the disease. But when it comes to therapies, Colton says people can’t just eat more arginine or take arginine dietary supplements. While arginine could enter the bloodsteam via supplements, it wouldn't necessarily cross over the "blood brain barrier" and enter the brain.

“We have to think about this as a much more complex system than we thought in the past,” she says.

Before the mice began showing Alzheimer’s symptoms, Colton and her team blocked arginase, an enzyme that breaks down arginine, using the drug difluoromethylornithine, also known as DFMO. As a result, the scientists saw fewer microglia and plaques develop in the brains of the mice, and the mice performed better on memory tests.

The results seem promising.....

So who's right and who's wrong.....

So many of the "insiders" on this board say Praluent will flop. Thomson Reuters predict it to be a $4 billion drug by 2019. Who's right and who's wrong? I have a tendency to lean with the pro's at Thomson Reuters. I also think the guys at Regeneron and Sanofi know what they are doing as well.

It seems like almost every post on every board says their company is gonna flop and is terrible. The bottom line is the company is gonna look out for the company and if you suck you will be fired.

What are the top dermatology companies to work for?

Hi

I sure would appreciate any feedback on those that have been in the dermatology business for years on the best companies to work for in terms of company culture/work environment and products.

I have been a hospital specialty rep for over 20 years and to be honest, I am at the point in my career that I really just want to sell something I am very passionate about and love the areas of esthetics like cosmeceuticals. I believe I would really enjoy doing something like that and I'm ready to make a drastic change even if it means sacrificing some of my salary.

In dermatology, what would you consider the dream jobs? I'm not saying I would necessarily get one of these jobs, but it would be fun to research that and see.

Thanks for your help!

On the bubble

Hey gang,

So this comes more from an outsider looking in, but I have had lengthy discussions about coming on board in Discovery Oncology as a Sr Scientist. They are doing reference checks, how long until you think an offer might get done or do you think there might be other things at play still? Any insight would be great if you have been a hiring manager or on the HR end. Thanks!

Valeant Welcome Kit for Salix Employees

Home Office Update:

As I said in my previous posts, I will do what I can to provide you with an update of what I do know. Valeant HR presented a welcome kit to permanent employees explaining a very high level of their benefits package. If you received this, then I will not bother wasting anytime. However, here is my personal (my opinion) view of this welcome kit based on additional interactions with Valeant sr. staff, interaction with current Valeant employees both entry level and mid-level managers, and ex-Valeant employees who went through a true Valeant acquisition process previously. If I offend anyone from Valeant or Salix, that is not my intention here, just trying to let the sales reps and others know what's to come from my personal experiences and discussions.

Valeant Welcome Kit to Salix Permanent Employees

1. Overall benefits are a wash, except the following; stocks invest every three years instead of 25% each year. Bonus potential for salary grade appears to be 10-15% lower as compared to Salix unless you are one of those Sr. VPs in which Valeant commits to look after with a collective 12-13% of net income. To me, employees who are below the level of Sr. Director should not expect to receive the same benefits as before. This is why the 2.5% is a standard rate increase b/c Valeant can't afford to spend 12-13% of net income and then give all of their employees more than 2.5%.

2. No potential for growth. As per my initial introduction, I have talked to various folks internally, externally, and with my future boss and it is clear, promotions are not going to happen anytime soon unless you end up being someone's lap boy or if you work in NJ. They will tell you that this will be a new company with the Salix staff, but once you start asking questions (which I encourage all of you to ask when talking with your future boss) you will develop your own opinion.

3. Don't expect to do the same job; not sure how this might impact the sales reps b/c you are already locked into a territory (that could still be redefined based on expansions), but for home office, most of the permanents are being asked to do something different than what they have done in the past. The difference is not as extreme as working in quality and now they are asking you to work in finance, but just note that this might be helpful based upon your termination/severance contract.

4. Based on other interactions with Valeant employees, it appears that they all get nervous during acquisitions. Simply put, they are fearful of being replaced regardless of their performance. It appears that they have terminated employees and replaced them with cheaper labor force. I was also told that if your severance package is 12 months, then don't be surprised that they terminate you on the 13 month and replace you with cheaper labor force. For those who stay, you will have to take on more work and work with colleagues who are less experienced.

5. Short vs. Long-term strategy: Valeant uses a short-term strategic model. They don't look at long-term simply because their business model is to volatile. No time to stabilize the growth due to so many acquisitions. So if you want a "short-term" job, this might be the place for you.

6. Valeant's severance policy is too vague meaning that they don't share the details of this. So if you are terminated through layoffs, I would expect 1-2 weeks per year of service (max up to 6 months). I was told that they are going to consider Salix employee time in defining this. However, this really doesn't matter since Valeant will never be acquired for reasons we all know. If you are terminated, not for cause, then I would anticipate 1 week per service.

7. Un-decisive Valeant Management Team: For some of the employees in the home office who were told that they would be let go 2-3 months after the acquisition, Valeant is now extending these. If you say no, you lose your severance package even if you have another job lined up. In short, Valeant could ask you to stay longer up till the day that your original retention date. What we are finding out is that the acquisition was so fast and/or Valeant sr. staff is lacking in the technical competency and this is creating chaos. Systems that they said initially they were going to terminate, now they are going to keep. This is happening across all departments.

8. For those of you who work in R&D, I would anticipate maybe one project surviving the cutoff since Valeant's model is not to develop drugs. Allergan was correct in their assessment and Valeants balance sheets show this as well (go check out how much they do spend on R&D and compare this to the salaries that are awarded to the top 1% at Valeant). The word on the street though is that maybe only 3-4 R&D permanent employees will remain in June (Salix permanents are leaving for other careers).

9. Valeant has already started increasing drug prices. I guess this is to make up for the additional sales price of Salix and this is what they do. These will be passed onto patients. Now, I get that this is a business, but just like anything else, if prices continue to rise, physicians will choose equivalent, comparable drugs at lesser prices. Valeant is also trying to ramp up inventory even though we have a huge inventory problem. It will be very interesting to see how the market views their earnings and costs at the next quarterly meeting. I am not anticipating Valeant in meeting their goals (500 million in synergistic cost savings within 6 months and reduction of inventory by end of year). With their debt notes and lack of cash flow, don't expect this companies stock to increase significantly in the next few years. I would short the stock at best. Again, my opinion here and what I have heard. Why do I mention this, if you think there is potential to become filthy rich with their stock grants, I would be careful here. You will not see the increase that we saw with Salix in the same time period and will have to spend at least 3 years to reap any significant benefits.

10. According to current and previous Salix employees, they are anticipating a high percentage of employees to leave. They understand that their model is to volatile and that it is very short-term. So if you leave, they win, if you stay, they win. If you do stay, again, be careful as if history repeats itself, Valeant could terminate you on April 2, 2016 (for example). According to recruiters, the job market is great right now, but they anticipate a decline in hiring after September based on economic indicators.

Just a quick top 10 list. If you are one that is welcoming change, then good b/c it is coming. Maybe you do not or did not like your previous boss, but based on what I have seen and heard, the chances are it will be worse. Also, there are rumors that the Salix Raleigh site will only be around for 12-18 months. Ironic that this equivalent to our severance package timelines.

Hope this was helpful to some of you; some of this was already stated, but I had some interesting conversations on Friday/Saturday with ex-Valeant employees and current Valeant employees. They indicated that they are strapped to not to leave because of the increase in their stock price over the last year and they are waiting for their vested date to leave. They want to leave now, but financially, they will wait it out.

Best of luck to all of you.

VPak is the 2014 Edsel

A little back history...Business, Marketing majors and MBA's are probably familiar with this case study. For those not familiar read on.

The Edsel was an automobile marque that was planned, developed, and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company during the 1958, 1959, and 1960 model years.

With the Edsel, Ford had expected to make significant inroads into the market share of both General Motors and Chrysler and close the gap between itself and GM in the domestic American automotive market.

But contrary to Ford's internal plans and projections, the Edsel never gained popularity with contemporary American car buyers and sold poorly.

The Ford Motor Company lost millions of dollars on the Edsel's development, manufacturing and marketing.

The very word "Edsel" became a popular symbol for failure.[1]

Sound familiar? VPak is a modern day Edsel.
