Obesity More Expensive than Terrorism

It’s no new news that obesity is a big problem, both in the United States and abroad, and according to a new report by the McKinsey Global Institute, the cost of this problem is staggering – more than $2 trillion, nearly as much the cost of terrorism and war combined.

The report, released Thursday, found that 2.1 billion people, 30 percent of the world’s population, are obese, and warned that unless drastic steps are taken, that number could rise to 50 percent of the world’s population by 2030.

“Obesity is a systemic issue, born of many interlocking factors, and only a systemic response will do,” said Richard Dobbs, director of the McKinsey Global Institute, according to the Daily Mail.

In the report, the authors said any efforts to curb the obesity rate need to be a concerted, worldwide effort, and not piecemeal. “Above all, boldness is imperative,” they wrote. “Nothing else with mitigate the huge and rising human, social and economic costs of this crisis.”

Diabetes is not the problem. Overeating is the problem. Wake up.
