I basically grew up in this company...over 20 years service.
Took the package. Amgen taught me so much...learned how to act professional even if I didn't want to on some days. Learned Quality and Manufacturing concepts and so much about how our products are made (chromatography, harvest, cell culture, purification, columns, filters, freezer and refrigeration, calibration, raw materials, warehouse, plant operations, FDA audits, internal and external audits, purchasing, laboratory processes, policy and procedures) on and on.
My kids enjoyed the picnics, the parties. I enjoyed the fermentation seminars and the little perks like breakfast and ice cream. The decent paycheck. The bonuses The nice people and friends I will have for a lifetime.
I understand in the business world now that business comes first. I look back on my career and I was treated well. But in the end I became a number. As every company..Amgen is no different. I have no resentment, I realize the way the world works. I feel grateful that I had such a long run in the company. I was depressed for a while about leaving..but I now know it is just a different chapter in my life. One I was ready for...but didn't realize it until I was forced to make a decision. I wish Amgen and Amgen employees the best and hope the company continues to thrive to help our youngsters coming out of college live the life that I have lived for the past 20 years....provide for their families and to have the sense of security that a job like this brings.
For future layoffs or RIF packages...my message to those people is that you will find peace..you will realize that when it happens it is the best timing. I don't know why it worked out to be a positive thing for me when I was so saddened at the notice of the severance package. But today I sit on my couch..paying off all my bills...living a simpler life...and its time for me....I will find something that I enjoy in the future...I have time to spend with my family and friends right now. And I have all this because I worked for a great company. Do your best..don't worry about the future. It all works out.
